Linda Wretman Becomes Ongoing’s First CFO
Ongoing is now taking the next step in its global expansion by recruiting its first Chief Financial Officer, Linda Wretman.
Since implementing Ongoing WMS at their Danish warehouse in 2020, Blue Water Shipping has rapidly expanded their operations globally. The adaptability and scalability of Ongoing WMS have allowed them to manage a wide variety of goods across multiple locations, from e-commerce products to large-scale project cargo.
Blue Water Shipping (BWS) is a global leader in logistics services in supply chain management and has long prioritized flexibility, efficiency, and customer satisfaction across its expansive operations. With more than 80 offices and 2,700 employees worldwide, BWS manages diverse logistical needs, ranging from e-commerce products to large-scale project cargo such as wind turbine components. To optimize their complex logistics operations, BWS relies on Ongoing WMS which has come to majorly impact how they manage their network of warehouses across the globe.
The relationship between BWS and Ongoing began in 2020 with a single site in Denmark, as BWS was looking for a solution to replace their previous WMS. After initial testing and implementation, they found that Ongoing WMS could support almost all of their relevant scenarios and be customized to fit their business needs. Later on, the scalability of Ongoing WMS allowed BWS to expand its use globally. Daniel Mortensen, WMS Frontend Specialist at BWS, explained the process:
“We started testing Ongoing WMS on one of our biggest warehouses in Denmark, implementing a few customers to make sure that the system would fulfill all our requirements. After a few months of testing, we could already see the benefit of the system and started a global roll-out. Soon after, we were able to tailor each location’s WMS to fit exactly their needs."
Today, Ongoing WMS is live in 20 BWS locations, including Europe, Australia, the US, Greenland, and Asia. This rapid expansion is a good example of the scalability of Ongoing WMS, which can be tailored to meet the specific needs of each BWS location, regardless of region.
As BWS expanded globally, they worked closely with Ongoing to adapt the WMS to their diverse logistics requirements. Herman Jansson, Customer-Responsible Software Engineer at Ongoing and BWS' main contact, shared how he has implemented custom pallet item solutions for their unique needs:
“The use of pallet items is custom when receiving, moving, repacking, picking, packing and loading goods. There is now functionality to notify what is arriving at the warehouse and in which packages the goods are located. These packages can be received and handled as packages in the warehouse, still with information about their contents. When the goods are to be shipped, they can also be managed at the package level, ensuring easy picking, packing (in containers if necessary), and loading. With this structure, there is strong traceability of goods through their flow, and validation at many points to avoid mishandling.”
“Ongoing WMS allows us to support all our customers’ needs. We do full-scale integrations with global customers, allowing them to work in their own ERP system only and getting all live data directly from Ongoing WMS. Whenever something is received at the warehouse, their system is immediately updated with the information. Other customers need a quick and simple solution, and with the customer user interface in Ongoing WMS, this allows customers who don’t need or don’t want to invest in an integration to still have the same benefits,” Mortensen said.
By offering a highly customizable WMS, BWS can efficiently handle different types of goods, including retail, electronics, and even food, each of which comes with its own specific requirements.
Improving Warehouse Operations and Efficiency
Furthermore, Ongoing WMS has had a significant impact on warehouse efficiency, allowing BWS to optimize day-to-day operations. Mathias Lind, Logistics Manager at BWS, highlighted the operational benefits: “Ongoing WMS has greatly improved our warehouse operations, boosting efficiency and adaptability. With its effective features, our team can accurately manage inventory, optimize space, and streamline both inbound and outbound processes.”
Lind continued by adding: "The system's flexibility and quick adaptability allow us to swiftly respond to customer needs, whether catering to large-scale e-commerce or specialized project cargo, all while maintaining an intuitive interface for smooth operation." This efficiency and adaptability are crucial in meeting the ever-changing demands of BWS's customers, whether it’s ensuring smooth operations for large-scale logistics projects or optimizing day-to-day e-commerce flows.
From an IT perspective, the implementation of Ongoing WMS has been important in solving daily operational challenges. Mortensen explains how the IT team at BWS supports their logistics in close collaboration with Ongoing.
"We keep getting new requirements from the business to solve complex logistics needs, and in close dialogue with Ongoing, we find solutions to solve these. We keep evolving the platform to both optimize the business and add new warehouses to the platform around the world,” Mortensen explained. “The biggest benefit with Ongoing WMS I see is definitely ready-made integrations and well-documented APIs, flexibility, and strong support from Ongoing to solve our business needs," Mortensen added.
This partnership has led to impressive tangible results. Mortensen noted that since implementing Ongoing WMS in 2020, BWS now handles ten times more orders with only slight adjustments to their workforce:
"We have implemented a lot of operational saving solutions, including batch picking and vertical lift modules. We now handle 10 times more orders than we did before we implemented Ongoing WMS in 2020, and only adjusted our workforce slightly.” This data demonstrates how Ongoing WMS has not only increased the capacity of BWS’s operations but also done so efficiently, without the need for significant increases in staffing.
The collaboration between BWS and Ongoing has been a key factor in the success of this WMS deployment. Mortensen praised the quality of service provided by Ongoing’s software engineers:
“We have benefited greatly from the excellent service from Ongoing's software engineers, who both understand the business and how to solve complex requirements from our customers. You always get a quick response with relevant help and information if you ask.”
Herman Jansson added his perspective on the successful collaboration: "Through a long and close collaboration, we have created a structure that allows us to easily and quickly connect more sites to Ongoing WMS, even those with more complex flows. These new sites can be up and running quickly with minimal involvement from Ongoing.”
As BWS continues to grow and evolve, their partnership with Ongoing ensures that they remain agile, efficient, and ready to tackle new challenges in the logistics industry. Jansson concluded with some words about the ever-evolving collaboration:
"We are not at the finish line yet because new cases and more sites are still being introduced to Ongoing WMS.”
