IT systems for coordinated goods distribution helps reduce environmental impact

The logistics company Scandinavian Supply Chain AB, which are predominantly owned by Alwex Transport AB, has been contracted to coordinate the distribution for Växjö municipality. As IT support, a system from the company Ongoing Warehouse AB, is used.

"Since autumn 2010, we have used the Ongoing Warehouse Management System as our WMS for our 3PL business. Ongoing, in cooperation with us, has developed cross-docking functionality in the product that we use to handle the assignment from Växjö. Both we and our customers, Växjö Municipality, save money and streamline management through the use of Ongoing Warehouse Management System. We also see an advantage in that the system can handle both the 3PL and major cross-docking", said Peter Sunesson, CEO of Scandinavian Supply Chain AB.

Växjö Municipality has decided to coordinate the distribution of goods to all municipal entities in order to minimize transportation and reduce environmental impact.

"With the new logistics set-up, all supplies to the municipal units converge together in our distribution center, from where goods are distributed to the final consignee. This coordination on the flow of goods lowers the number of runs and contributes also to reduce the environmental impact. At the same time the reduction in heavy traffic contributes to safer and better living environment in the inner city and around schools", says Peter Sunesson.

"We can see a trend that interest is increasing in the coordinated distribution, or so-called cross-docking, among both the goods owners and the logistics companies. In addition to a profitable and efficient way to distribute goods, there are other benefits in terms of reduced environmental impact", said Gerhard Guron, CEO at Ongoing Warehouse AB.

"Since we, two years ago, participated in a master thesis on Green IT at Chalmers University of Technology, we have actively worked to become a green IT company. Because we host the system for all our customers, we include integrated server clusters to reduce environmental impact. We are currently working remotely in all our operations to further reduce environmental impact. Of course it is also gratifying that our system helps logistics solutions that improve the environment", said Gerhard Guron further.
